Bharathidasan University will offer full-time MBA in three
specialisations: Marketing Management, Systems Management, and Hospital
Management, from 2011-12.
These programmes are to be offered through the Departments of Commerce and Financial Studies, Computer Science, and Life-long learning respectively, Vice-Chancellor K. Meena said on Saturday.
A resolution tabled at the meeting of the Standing Committee on Academic Affairs by N. Jamaluddin, Professor, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, found favour with many members and was approved. Dr. Jamaluddin suggested that MBA programmes with Human Resources, Marketing, Supply Chain, Logistics, Tourism, Real Estates, Systems and Hospital Management as electives and specialisation be approved.
At present, the university offers two full-time MBA courses in Financial Studies and Environmental Management. However, the entry qualification for these programmes is undergraduation in relevant disciplines.
Dr. Meena said the three new MBA programmes will be offered in keeping with the approval by the Syndicate at the start of this year. Economically backward students will be provided opportunity to pursue MBA without compromise on quality, she said, informing that a decision on creation of an exclusive department for MBA programmes will be discussed at the next meeting of the Syndicate.
N. Rajendran, Professor and Head, Department of History, Bharathidasan University, apprehended that starting a full-fledged MBA Department may not be in the fitness of things when Bharathidasan Institute of Management was already functioning as a Centre of Excellence of the university.
However, the collective reasoning of K. Sekar, Principal, Chidambaram Pillai College for Women; Karunanidhi, Head, Department of Tamil, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College; P. Prema, Professor and Head, Department of Education, Alagappa University; Syndicate Members Govindasamy and Rajagopal, and others was that MBA programmes in new specialisations could be offered to benefit students in the university's jurisdictional area. The Vice-Chancellor also announced start of 15 other new programmes from 2011-12. They constitute M.P.A (Master of Performing Arts) programmes in Classical Dance, Drama and Theatre Art, and Visual Art; M.Sc. programmes in Statistics (with Computer Applications), Biodiversity and Bioprospecting (UGC Innovative Programme), and Geology; M.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication; P.G. Diploma Programmes in Environmental Genomics (UGC Innovative Programme), and Journalism and Mass Communication; Diploma in Saiva Siddhanta; and certificate programmes in Network Management and Administration, Web Design and Development, Sanskrit (part-time), and Hindi (part-time).
